In this tutorial we are going to create a text effect inspired by the Frozen Disney movies. The main concept is to show you how to create an ice texture effect with a variety of textures and text style attributes with Adobe Photoshop.
Tutorial Assets
The following assets were used during the production of this tutorial:
- Background.psd
- o-shape.psd
- Cinzel OT1 Font
- Patterns.pat patterns file pack with four patterns inside.
- Contour.shc contour file pack with one contour inside.
- Download and Install the Pattern file "Patterns.pat".
- Download and Install the Contour file "Contour.shc".
Note: To install, you have to double-click the icons. It's that simple.
- Download and install the "Cinzel OT1" font.
- Download both PSD files.
1. How to Create the Text and Align It
Step 1
Open the file Background.psd.
Step 2
Type the word "FrozE" using the Cinzel OT1 font. Capitalize the first and the last letter.
- Font Size: 160 px
- Tracking: -20 pt
- Font style: Black
- Anti-aliasing mode: Smooth
- Color:
#ffffff
Step 3
Using the Move Tool, select the text and background layer, and then use the align commands on the top menu to center the text.
- Align Horizontal: Center
- Align Vertical: Center
2. How to Add the "o" Shape
In order to create a dedicated work, we are going to use a custom shape to replace the "o" letter.
Step 1
Delete the letter "o" and press the Spacebar three times.
Step 2
Open the o-shape.psd file and drag and drop the "O shape" to the main design. Select all three layers and align them as shown in the image below.
3. How to Curve the Text
Select the text layer only and, using the Type Tool, select the Create Warped Text button and use the values shown in the image below.
- Style: Arc Lower
- Horizontal: Checked
- Bend: -10%
4. How to Distort the Edges
Now we are going to distort the edges to get an irregular ice effect.
Create a new layer style by double-clicking on the "O Shape" layer and apply the shape-pattern in Stroke options.
Go to Layer Style > Stroke and use the values shown in the image below.
- Size: 2 px
- Position: Outside
- Blend Mode: Normal
- Opacity: 100%
- Fill Type: Pattern
- Pattern: Select the shape-pattern "Frozen Edges"
- Scale: 100%
- Link with Layer checkbox: Checked
Now repeat it with the text layer or copy and paste the layer style by clicking Alt and dragging the fx icon to apply the same layer style.
5. How to Create a 3D Text Effect
Step 1
Select both layers and convert them to one Smart Object by Right-Clicking on the selected layers and then clicking Convert to Smart Object to start handling it as one piece.
Then you have to duplicate the layer and rename both as "Froze A" and "Froze B".
Step 2
Turn off the "Froze A" layer and duplicate the "Froze B" layer eight times. We are going to use these eight layers to create the 3D projection.
Step 3
Select the first "Froze B" layer and reduce it using the Free Transform option (Control-T). Lock the proportions by checking the loop icon and use the values shown in the image below.
- W: 99.50%
- H: 99.50%
- Maintain aspect ratio icon: Checked
Press Enter to confirm the changes.
Step 4
We have to do the same process with the eight layers, one by one, reducing by 0.5% each time using the values shown in the image below.
This is because the font type has small details and the 3D projection needs to be constant and solid.
- Froze B: 99.50%
- Froze B: 99.00%
- Froze B: 98.50%
- Froze B: 98.00%
- Froze B: 97.50%
- Froze B: 97.00%
- Froze B: 96.50%
- Froze B: 96.00%
6. How to Create the Main Layer Style
At this point, we have created the base to start the styling.
Step 1
Turn on the "Froze A" layer and select it. Then double-click the selected layer to create a layer style and use the values shown in the image below.
Go to Layer Style > Pattern Overlay, click on the Pattern box, and choose "FrozeA" from the list. This texture is the base of the text effects.
Step 2
Now we are going to create a gradient overlay, which will give a fantasy ice color effect. Open the Layer Style again and modify the Gradient Overlay setting to the following values.
- Blend Mode: Soft Light
- Opacity: 100%
- Reverse: Unchecked
- Style: Linear
- Align with Layer: Checked
- Angle 90º
- Scale: 100%
Click on the Gradient Bar and make a gradient with the settings below.
Tip: To create a new point in the gradient, you have to click under the gradient bar. Clicking each one of the color stops allows you to modify the Location and Color.
- First Stop Color:
#9dd0ed - First Stop Position: 0%
- Second Stop Color:
#71c5e9 - Second Stop Position: 26%
- Third Stop Color:
#02b2ed - Third Stop Position: 53%
- Fourth Stop Color:
#1c6ba4 - Fourth Stop Position: 100%
Step 3
Now we are going to emphasize the highlights to give more realism to the ice effect. Go to Layer Style > Satin and use the settings shown below.
- Blend Mode: Color Dodge
- Color:
#ffffff - Opacity: 10%
- Angle 170º
- Distance: 11 px
- Size: 20 px
Now, we are going to add the previously installed "Contour.shc" file. Click on the Contour drop-down icon and then select the contour named "Cove - Deep".
Now we can continue:
- Anti-aliased checkbox: Unchecked
- Invert checkbox: Checked
Step 4
To illuminate the edges and give the backlight a real look and feel, we are going to use the Outer Glow option.
Go to Layer Style > Outer Glow and use the values shown below.
- Blend Mode: Color Dodge
- Opacity: 40%
- Noise: 0%
- Color:
#d9ffff - Technique: Softer
- Spread: 0%
- Size: 1%
- Contour: Default
- Anti-aliased: Unchecked
- Range: 70%
- Jitter: 0%
Step 5
We are going to add a "solar aura" at the top, using the Drop Shadow option. Go to Layer Style > Drop Shadow and use the values shown in the image below.
- Blend Mode: Linear Dodge (Add)
- Color:
#fff998 - Opacity: 30%
- Angle: -90º
- Use Global Light: Unchecked
- Distance: 100 px
- Spread: 0 px
- Size: 80 px
- Contour: Default
- Noise: 0%
- Layer Knocks Out Drop Shadow: Checked
7. How to Create the Second Layer Style
Step 1
We are getting close to the end. Now we have to select all the "Froze B" layers and convert them to a single Smart Object by Right-Clicking on the selected layers and choosing Convert to Smart Object to start handling it as one piece.
Step 2
Let's add texture to the 3D layer by double-clicking the selected layer and using the values shown in the image below.
Go to Layer Style > Pattern Overlay, click on the Pattern box, and choose "FrozeB" from the list.
Step 3
To match the color, add a Color Overlay with the following values.
- Blend Mode: Color Burn
- Color:
#6ce3ff - Opacity: 100%
Step 4
And a Drop Shadow to give some distance from the background image.
Go to Layer Style > Drop Shadow and use the values shown in the image below.
- Blend Mode: Multiply
- Color:
#3dc3db - Opacity: 60%
- Angle: 90º
- Use Global Light: Unchecked
- Distance: 100 px
- Spread: 10 px
- Size: 90 px
- Contour: Default
- Noise: 10%
- Layer Knocks Out Drop Shadow: Checked
8. How to Create the Backlight
We are going to add some magic by adding a backlight.
Step 1
Duplicate the "Froze B" layer, rename it as "Backlight", and Rasterize the layer (Right-Click > Rasterize Layer).
Step 2
Now we need to make a beam of light from this. Go to Filter > Blur > Radial Blur and use the values shown in the image below.
- Amount: 100
- Blur Method: Zoom
- Quality: Best
We need to increase the size using the Free Transform option (Control-T). Lock the proportions by checking the loop icon and use the values shown in the image below.
- W: 120%
- H: 120%
- Maintain aspect ratio icon: Checked
Press Enter to confirm the changes.
To finish it, just set the layer blending option as Linear Dodge (Add).
9. How to Create Ice Cracks
it's time to add some little cracks at the front to finish the work.
Step 1
Duplicate the "Froze A" layer and rename it "Froze 0". Clear the layer style by (right-click > Clear Layer Style). And set the Fill to 0%.
Step 2
Go to Layer Style > Pattern Overlay, click on the Pattern box, and choose the pattern named "pattern3324234" from the list.
- Blend Mode: Overlay
- Opacity: 100%
- Scale: 50%
- Link with Layer: Checked
