Generative Fill

The new Generative Fill tool, powered by Adobe Firefly, is the highlight of Photoshop and is likely to become one of your favorite tools. It offers various applications and innovative approaches to familiar techniques.

Add Details

Generative Fill is a great tool for adding details. It's easy to use: just select the area you want to add the detail to, type in what you want to add, and hit Generate!

Generative Fill will match the lighting and perspective of the existing image to generate your prompt and add it to the image.

Generative Fill also uses the shape of the selection to guide the shape of the generated detail. This makes the freehand Lasso Tool a great choice for creating your selection.

It will present you with three options at a time, and you can generate more or adjust the prompt as needed. You can find all the options in the Properties panel.

Remove Details

But it's not just for adding things—you can also use it to remove details. Simply select what you want to remove.

Next, tell it to "remove the detail," and Generate. Everything remains on its own layer, giving you the power to edit, refine, and be as precise as you need to be.

Generative Expand

Additionally, the Crop tool now offers new Fill options, most notably Generative Expand. Essentially, it functions as a reverse crop. By selecting Generative Expand, you can enlarge images beyond their original size and let Firefly fill in the missing parts.

This feature works especially well with detailed landscapes and is one of the most exciting applications of Generative Fill.

Blend Images Together

What's even more remarkable is that Generative Fill can now be used to combine two existing images. If there's a gap between two layers, simply select it and click Generate without adding a prompt.

The space between the images will be filled seamlessly, saving you hours of compositing time.

Context Bar

Introducing the new floating Context bar! It's not just where generative fill lives; it's a whole new way to interact with common Photoshop tools. The Context bar in Photoshop makes navigation much easier for beginner users, which seems to be Adobe's new goal going forward.

The context bar adapts based on your selected tool or layer. For example, with a selection tool active, we have access to Generative Fill and our Modify Selection options. However, it's contextual, so it changes depending on the tool and layer type you have selected.

Updated Gradient Tool in Photoshop

Now, let's talk about the updated Gradient tool in Photoshop. After 30 years, you no longer need to click repeatedly to achieve the perfect gradient. The Gradient tool is now fully dynamic.

How to Make a Gradient in Photoshop

We can create a gradient just like before, but now we have the option to adjust the spread, shape, and angle using the different anchors.

We can also switch between styles, gradient presets, and colors without having to redo our gradient. However, if we want to fine-tune them, we still have access to our standard gradient properties.

How to Edit Gradients in Photoshop

That's right: you can edit gradients in Photoshop now! The best part is that gradients are now non-destructive! You can edit using these anchors until you rasterize the gradient layer itself.

The gradient editor in Photoshop is located in the Properties panel when a gradient layer is active. That's how to make a gradient in Photoshop.

Improved Adjustments

Now, let's talk about the improvements made to the Adjustments panel. They've given the Adjustments panel a significant facelift! It's now vertical, making it easier to navigate and more user-friendly.

At the top, you'll notice our brand-new adjustment presets. We have a few options available, and if you click on More, you'll find even more presets to choose from. Each preset comes with a live preview when you hover over it.

When you select a preset, it automatically creates and groups the individual adjustments within it. From there, you can fine-tune your settings and masks.

Photoshop Online

Introducing Photoshop Online! It's Adobe's in-browser photo editor designed for beginners and quick edits. And yes, it has generative fill tools. In fact, it heavily relies on them.

It's not free, but it is available to anyone with a Photoshop Creative Cloud Plan. Give it a try if you already have Photoshop!
