1. How to Extract an Eyelash Image in Photoshop
Step 1
Our first step in learning to create a set of Adobe Photoshop eyelash brushes is to a new canvas and drop in an eyelash image. You want something with high contrast between the lash and skin and something where the lash is well defined.
Step 2
Now, let’s add a Layer Mask to our stock image, double-clicking the Layer Mask to open up the layer mask’s properties.
Step 3
We are going to click Color Range and then, using the Eyedropper tool, we want to choose the darkest spot of the eyelash.
That will do a lot of the heavy lifting for us, but we can further refine the mask using the Fuzziness slider. Sliding it to the left will select less, while sliding it right will select more. The amount will vary from image to image. You want as much eyelash as possible, but as little eyelid as possible.
I ended up with about 90 Fuzziness. We can click OK when happy.
Step 4
With a large semi-hard round brush, we can clean up the outer mask: the larger areas that don’t need much precision.
Step 5
Next, zoom in nice and close, and mask out the areas close to the eyelash using a smaller brush. Don’t worry if you end up masking out some of the smaller eyelashes as well. There will be plenty left over.
2. How to Create a Photoshop Brush
Step 1
With our selection fished, we need to prep our canvas and then finally turn this image into a brush!
Let’s create a black Color Fill layer and clip it into our eyelash layer, turning the eyelash solid black.
Step 2
We can finish up by smoothing the eyelash out using the Smudge tool set to about 3 to 6%.
This step is completely optional, as the texture of the lash brush will actually give you a more realistic lash.
Step 3
Finally, let’s create our new brush by cropping the canvas down to size, and then going to Edit > Define Brush Preset.
3. How to Use an Eyelash Brush in Photoshop
Step 1
Let’s look at how to use eyelash brushes in Photoshop! Open up a new canvas, create a new layer, and paint on your new eyelash!
Step 2
Find a subject you want to give a set of dramatic eyelashes to! You can use the Brush Settings panel to Angle the brush as needed, and you can use the transform controls to further contour the eyelash to your subject’s eye.
Step 3
Add even more length using the Smudge tool, just as we did before, and paint in highlights using a white default round brush.
Conclusion
And that is all there is to creating Adobe Photoshop eyelash brushes! Now, go on and create your very own set of eyelash brushes in Photoshop, both big and small!
