Travel seems cheaper and accessible to more people than ever before. However, many people ask: can we still do the things we want to do, travel where we want to go, but be more environmentally conscious, more responsible?
Environmental campaigner Greta Thunburg got the world’s attention when she sailed across the Atlantic to attend UN climate summits in New York City. After her trip, plane passenger traffic reduced by 4% in Sweden, with many opting to forego domestic flights in favour of other, more economical means of transport.
It's hard to feel like you’re making a difference by changing small, individual behaviours or habits, and until governments start making changes to reduce our carbon emissions and make meaningful steps towards reducing our environmental impact.
Shaming or guilting the world into change is never going to work—big corporations are having far great impact—but until governments start making changes to reduce carbon emissions and make meaningful steps towards reducing our environmental impact, we are left with each doiong our part to not only influence small, manageable change, but to set an example for those in power and put on pressure for real reform. This particularly is the case for those in businesses, of all size, who are in a position to make beneficial changes to the we way travel. Consider:
- Working in more efficient ways every day: car-pooling schemes for employees, flexible parental leave, and work-from-anywhere arrangements
- Train and coach travel to domestic conferences rather than flights
- Benefits to employees like a discount on public transport, or money off a bike to encourage leaving the car at home
Particularly if you’re travelling within your own country, public transport like trains can not only be a more Eco-friendly form of travel when compared to flying, but they’re often nicer ways to travel and see a bit more of the country.
