How to Make a Baseball Card Template in Photoshop

In this tutorial, you will learn how to create a baseball card template in Photoshop. I will explain everything in so much detail that everyone can create the effect, even those who have just opened Photoshop for the first time.

What You'll Need

To recreate the design above, you will need the following resources:

1. How to Start Creating a Sports Card Photoshop Template

In this section, we're going to start creating a sports card template. Go to File > New and set the Width to 2.5 in, Height to 3.5 in, and Resolution to 300 px/in.

2. How to Create a Template Border

Now we're going to create the template border. Choose the Rounded Rectangle Tool, click anywhere inside the canvas to create a new rounded rectangle shape layer, and set the Width to 730 px, Height to 1030 px, and Radii to 10 px. Then, set the Fill Solid Color to #ffe533 and center this layer both vertically and horizontally on the canvas. Name this layer Border.

3. How to Create the Background

Step 1

In this section, we're going to create a background for our baseball card template. Choose the Rounded Rectangle Tool, click anywhere inside the canvas to create a new rounded rectangle shape layer, and set the Width to 690 px, Height to 990 px, and Radii to 20 px. Then, set the Fill Solid Color to #00a2ff and align this layer both vertically and horizontally on the canvas. Name this layer Card Background.

Step 2

Now choose the Custom Shape Tool, select the Registration Target 2 shape, click anywhere inside the canvas to create a new custom shape layer, and set the Width and Height to 1350 px. Then, set the Fill Solid Color to #ffffff and align this layer both vertically and horizontally on the canvas.

Step 3

Control-click on the Card Background layer thumbnail to make a selection of this layer. Then, go to Layer > Layer Mask > Reveal Selection to add a layer mask that reveals the selected area of the layer.

Step 4

Now change the Opacity of this layer to 20% and name it Background Shape.

4. How to Add a Photo to the Baseball Card

Step 1

In this section, we're going to add a photo to the baseball card template. Choose the Custom Shape Tool, select the 5 Point Star shape, click anywhere inside the canvas to create a new custom shape layer, and set the Width to 625 px and Height to 594 px. Then, set the Fill Solid Color to #ffe533, Stroke Solid Color to #ffffff, and Stroke Width to 10 px. After that, position this layer with the coordinates X: 375.50 px and Y: 435 px and name it Photo Background.

Step 2

Now go to File > Open, select the stock photo, and click Open. Then, isolate the subject from the photo. You can follow How to Create an Isolated Object: Photoshop in 60 Seconds to see how to create an isolated subject. After that, Right-click on the photo layer and choose Convert to Smart Object.

Using the Move Tool (V), click and drag the subject layer to the baseball card template PSD file. Then, press Control-T on your keyboard to open the transform options and set the Width and Height of the layer to 24%. After that, position the layer as shown below, and name it Photo.

Step 3

Go to Layer > Layer Mask > Reveal All to add a layer mask that reveals the whole layer. Then, choose the Brush Tool (B), pick a hard brush, and set the foreground color to #000000. While the layer mask is selected, brush as shown below. Instead of brushing onto the layer mask, you can also make a selection and then fill it with a color.

5. How to Create the Stars

Step 1

In this section, we're going to create the stars. Choose the Custom Shape Tool, select the 5 Point Star shape, click anywhere inside the canvas to create a new custom shape layer, and set the Width to 75 px and Height to 71 px. Then, set the Fill Solid Color to #ffffff and position this layer with the coordinates X: 161.50 px and Y: 277.50 px. Name this layer Star_1.

Step 2

Now repeat this process to add as many star layers as you want, and name the layers by sequence number. Feel free to use different size settings. Then, select your first star layer and Shift-click on your last star layer to select all layers between. Press Control-G on your keyboard to create a new group from the selected layers, and name it Stars.

6. How to Add Text to a Card Design

Step 1

In this section, we're going to add some text. Choose the Custom Shape Tool, select the Banner 4 shape, click anywhere inside the canvas to create a new custom shape layer, and set the Width to 545 px and Height to 228 px. Then, set the Fill Solid Color to #ffffff and the Stroke Solid Color to #ffe533. After that, position this layer with the coordinates X: 375.50 px and Y: 876 px and name it Banner.

Step 2

Now choose the Horizontal Type Tool (T), set the font to Lovely Kids, font size to 80 px, alignment to Center, and color to #ffe533. Then, click anywhere inside the canvas, type the text "Baseball Team" (or whatever text you want), and position this layer with the coordinates X: 376 px and Y: 861.50 px.

Step 3

Right-click on this layer and choose Blending Options. Then, select and check the Stroke style and use the settings below:

Step 4

Now choose the Horizontal Type Tool (T), and set the font to Open Sans, font style to SemiBold, font size to 25 px, alignment to Center, and color to #00a2ff. Then, in the Character panel, check the All Caps option and set the Tracking to 200. Click anywhere inside the canvas, type the text "Isabelle Silva", and position this layer with the coordinates X: 376.15 px and Y: 923.57 px.

Step 5

Choose the Custom Shape Tool, select the Banner 4 shape, click anywhere inside the canvas to create a custom new shape layer, and set the Width and Height to 80 px. Then, set the Fill Solid Color to #ffffff and Stroke Solid Color to #ffe533. After that, position this layer with the coordinates X: 650 px and Y: 100 px and name it Background.

Step 6

Now choose the Horizontal Type Tool (T), and set the font to Open Sans, font style to Bold, font size to 30 px, alignment to Center, and color to #00a2ff. Then, click anywhere inside the canvas and type the text "CF". After that, Control-click on the Background shape layer thumbnail to make a selection of this layer, choose the Move Tool (V), and click on Align Vertical Center and Align Horizontal Center to align this layer both vertically and horizontally.

Step 7

Select the Background shape layer and Control-click on the CF layer to select both layers at the same time. Then, press Control-G on your keyboard to create a new group from the selected layers and name it Position.
