Wondering how to create a book template in Photoshop? Today, I am going to show you a simple way to create one! We'll use standard Photoshop tools to create a basic design for a book cover, back, and inside pages. 

Then I'll show you a Photoshop book template collection available on Envato Elements

You will need the following assets to complete this project:

1. How to Make a Book Cover Template in Photoshop

Step 1

Let's start by creating a new document with the following settings: 

  • Width: 326 mm
  • Height: 210 mm
  • Resolution: 300 dpi
  • Color Mode: CMYK

Step 2

Press Control-R to activate the guides, and then drag four guides to the borders of the document.

Step 3

Now, we need to add a place for the bleeds. Go to Image > Canvas Size and add 6 mm to each side of the document.

Step 4

Add four more guides marking the new borders of the document.

Step 5

Create two rectangles with a size of 148.34 mm by 210.06 mm, and move them to the left and right sides of the document while holding Shift.

Step 6

Create a shape for the spine using Yellow and a size of 29.97 mm by 215.98 mm, and move it to the center of the document.

Step 7

Select the background layer and press Control-I to invert its color.

Create a text layer using Montserrat Bold with 60 pt size and Yellow color.

Step 9

To align the text to the right side of the book cover, select the text layer and the right rectangle while holding Control, and then click Align Horizontal Center and Align Vertical Center.

Step 10

Create a text layer with the name of the author using Cardo font with 24 pt size and White color, and  then align it to the center of the right rectangle.

Step 11

Go to View > New Guide and use the following settings: 

  • Orientation: Horizontal
  • Position: 195 mm

After that, move the text layer to the  center of the guide while holding Shift.

Step 12

Let's add the link to your site using Montserrat Bold Font with 14 pt size and Yellow color, and align it to the right side of the document.

Step 13

Add a new Horizontal Guide at 20 mm, and add the title of your book to the left side of the document using Montserrat Bold with 30 pt size.

Step 14

Let's add a text box for quotes or a description of the book. Select Cardo Regular with 14 pt size and White color. Click and drag it to create the box area with a size of 135 by 83 mm. Put it 10 mm below the title.

Step 15

Create a rectangle with a size of 50 by 50 mm, and then press Control-T and set the following coordinates: 

  • X: 33.87 mm
  • Y: 150.28 mm

This is will be a placeholder for the portrait.

Step 16

Go to File > Place, select the portrait you want to use, and put it above the last shape layer. Then Right-Click > Create a Clipping mask in the Layers panel.

Step 17

Create another text box using Cardo Regular with 14 pt size and White color, and with a size of 80 by 50 mm. Put this layer 3 mm to the right of the portrait and 13 mm down from the previous text box.

Step 18

For the last step, let's add a title to the spine. Create a text layer using Montserrat Bold font with 24 pt size and Black color, and then press Control-T and rotate it 90° while holding Shift. And finally, Align the text to the spine rectangle.

2. How to Create a Book Page Template in Photoshop

Step 1

Create a new document with the following settings: 

  • Width: 148 mm
  • Height: 210 mm
  • CMYK colors

Step 2

Add four guides to the borders of the document, and then add 6 mm to the size of the canvas for the bleeds and add four more guides.

Step 3

Now, we need to add four more guides, so go to View > Guide and use the following settings:

  • Guide: Vertical; Position: 10 mm.
  • Guide: Vertical; Position: 145 mm.
  • Guide: Horizontal; Position: 5 mm.
  • Guide: Horizontal; Position: 210 mm.

Step 4

Select the Type Tool and set the Font to Cardo Regular with 14 pt size and Black color. After that, click and drag it to create the box area inside the guides we've created.

3. How to Create a Table of Contents

Step 1

Now let's create the table of contents. To save time, we could use the same page we've created in the previous step, but this time we need to add four different guides with the following settings: 

  • GuideVerticalPosition10 mm.
  • GuideVerticalPosition145 mm.
  • GuideHorizontalPosition10 mm.
  • GuideHorizontalPosition205 mm.

Step 2

Create a text box inside the guides we've just created, and add the title using Montserrat Bold with 14 pt size and create the table of contents using Cardo Italic with 16 pt size. Don't forget to activate the Left Align Text option.
