What You'll Be Creating

In this tutorial, we’ll be creating an invitation in InDesign with a Great Gatsby-inspired Art Deco style. Paying homage to Art Deco graphic design and 1920s graphic design, this Art Deco wedding invitation would suit a vintage-themed or elegant, cosmopolitan wedding.

This simple-to-create InDesign invitation template features hallmarks of classic 1920s Art Deco, with geometric patterns, a glamorous gold color palette, and an Art Deco font completing the design.

What Is Art Deco?

A geometric, ornate design style that originated in Europe in the 1920s, Art Deco design quickly became popular the world over, with a wide range of architecture, interiors, furniture and graphics being adorned with Art Deco patterns, metallic textures, jewel Art Deco colours, and Art Deco motifs.

This InDesign invitation template is inspired by 1920s Art Deco design, featuring Art Deco patterns, Art Deco colours, and a stylish Art Deco font.

We’ll be dipping into both Adobe Illustrator and Adobe InDesign for this beginner’s tutorial, and you'll pick up techniques for editing patterns in Illustrator, creating a geometric layout for your InDesign invitation template in InDesign, and formatting an Art Deco font using classic Art Deco colours.

What You’ll Need to Create Your InDesign Invitation Template

In this tutorial, you'll learn how to create an invitation in InDesign, as well as how to use and edit Illustrator pattern files.

This is a one-sided invitation card set up to a standard 5 by 7 inch size. To create the InDesign invitation template, you’ll need to have access to both Adobe InDesign and Adobe Illustrator, and to download the following fonts and graphics from Envato Elements:

Install the font files on your computer, and you’re ready to start creating your InDesign invitation template.

1. How to Set Up Your InDesign Invitation Template in InDesign

Step 1

Open InDesign and go to File > New > Document.

Select Print from the intent options at the top of the window.

Set the Width of the card to 5 in and Height to 7 in. Deselect Facing Pages.

Set the Top and Bottom Margin width to 1.1875 in, and the Right and Left Margins to 0.9375 in.

Add a Bleed of 0.25 in, before clicking Create

Step 2

Expand the Layers panel (Window > Layers) and double-click on Layer 1, renaming it Background

Select New Layer from the panel’s top-right drop-down menu, and name this second layer Pattern. Repeat to create a third layer, calling it Type

2. How to Add Color and Type to Your Art Deco Wedding Invitation

Step 1

Expand the Swatches panel (Window > Color > Swatches), and choose New Color Swatch from the panel’s main menu.

Set the Type to Process, Mode to CMYK, and the levels below to C=98 M=42 Y=49 K=65. Click Add and Done

Repeat to create a second swatch, this time a gold color with levels C=21 M=42 Y=70 K=10.

Step 2

From the Tools panel, choose the Rectangle Tool (M). Drag across the page, up to the bleed edge, before setting the Fill Color of the shape to dark blue.

Step 3

Lock the Background layer and unlock the top layer, Type

Using the Rectangle Tool as before, this time create a smaller rectangle that nests snugly along the margin line.

Set the Fill of this shape to dark blue, as before, and the Stroke Color to gold.

Step 4

Switch to the Type Tool (T) and drag to create a text frame across the top section of the smaller rectangle.

Type in the first name, and from either the top Controls panel of the Character and Paragraph panels (Window > Type & Tables > Character), set the Font to Garine, the style to First, Font Size to around 38 pt, and Align Center.

From the Swatches panel, adjust the Font Color to gold.

Step 5

Select the text frame and Edit > Copy, Edit > Paste it, moving this directly below the original. Edit the text to read the second name.

3. How to Edit a Pattern in Illustrator for Your InDesign Invitation Template

Step 1

In the bundle of Art Deco patterns you downloaded earlier, find the ‘Ribbons.ai’ file in the folder of AI versions. Open this in Adobe Illustrator.

With the pattern open, go to the Swatches panel (Window > Swatches), and choose New Swatch from the panel’s main menu.

Add the same navy blue CMYK swatch as you created in your InDesign document (C=98 M=42 Y=49 K=65), before clicking OK

dark blue

Repeat for the gold swatch as well (C=21 M=42 Y=70 K=10).

Step 4

Adjust the Fill Color of each of the ‘V’ shapes to the navy blue swatch, and that of the lines bounding and crossing the V shapes to gold.

Apply the dark blue swatch to the Fill of the small chevrons across the base of each row as well.

When you’ve done this, click Done at the top of the workspace.

Step 5

Expand the Layers panel (Window > Layers). Click on the arrow to the left of the ‘Art Deco...’ layer to expand it. Inside you will see a layer called <Path> indicating the green background color of the pattern.

Switch off the visibility of this layer, as well as the top layer, Texture

Drag the corners of the pattern’s frame outwards, expanding the width and height the pattern covers. This will give you a bit more of the pattern to work with on your invitation design.

Select the Artboard Tool (Shift-O), and drag the corners of the artboard outwards as well, expanding the white area behind the pattern.

Then File > Save As as an Illustrator file, naming the file something like ‘Ribbons_edited.ai’ to make it clear that this is the new, edited pattern.

4. How to Import Your Illustrator Pattern Into Your InDesign Invitation Template

Step 1

Head back to InDesign, and make sure you’re working on the Pattern layer.

Use the Rectangle Frame Tool (M) to create a tall, narrow image frame on the far-left side of the page, filling up a quarter-width of the page.

rectangle frame tool

File > Place, navigate to the ‘Ribbons_edited.ai’ file and Open it.

Double-click inside the image frame to select the pattern directly, and hold Shift while you scale it up or down. Aim to position the pattern in a similar way to how it’s shown below.

Step 2

To give your card a symmetrical style, we can flip the image frame, rather than allowing the pattern to fill just one whole image frame across the whole page.

Select the image frame and Edit > Copy, Edit > Paste it. Then on the copy, Right-Click > Transform > Flip Horizontal.

flip horizontal

Move this to the right of the first image frame, so that the pattern now extends across half of the card.

Step 3

Select both image frames and Edit > Copy, Edit > Paste them.

Then, with these both still selected, Right-Click > Transform > Flip Horizontal.

flip horizontal

Move them into position on the right side of the page.

Step 4

To integrate the inner rectangle featuring the text and the pattern together, first unlock the top Type layer.

Then create a small rectangle at the top-center of the inner rectangle, setting the Fill to dark blue to match the Fill of both rectangles on the Background and Type layers.

Copy and Paste the rectangle, moving this one into a mirrored position at the bottom of the text rectangle.

5. How to Export Your InDesign Invitation Template for Printing

Step 1

When you’ve finished working on your Art Deco wedding invitation, make sure to head up to File > Save to preserve your hard work.

Then go to File > Export.

In the window that opens, name your file and choose Adobe PDF (Print) from the Format menu.

Then hit Save

final invites on table

If you want to give your InDesign invitation template a different color scheme, it’s really easy to do so. For a white and gold invite, use the [Paper] or white swatch in place of the dark blue color in both the InDesign document and Illustrator pattern file.

Or why not try swapping dark blue for emerald green or pastel pink for a different variation on Art Deco design?

In this tutorial, you’ve picked up some versatile skills you can apply to other print design projects, including editing Illustrator patterns, formatting professional typography, and creating elegant color schemes. Good job!
